
Competence 7. Research and design sports and exercise options
Sports Professionals develop their research skills with a view to finding solutions to professional issues and devising innovations with added value for the professional practice. Research generates the knowledge used to create impact in specific professional duties and products in professional practice.
It all started with a wish spoken by Kelly Schat owner of Miboso during a visit:

'' Using the indoor environment of the sports studio for growing and growing herbs, microgreens herbs and plants. I would like to be able to serve clients with honest and pure food growing in their physical training environment. While at the same time improving the indoor environment by making it greener and thus more liveable. ''

The ‘Sterrebos’ area is relatively young with the final delivery in 2014. The futuristic, nautical-inspired office building of the DUO/tax authorities is the main eye-catcher of the green environment. Across the green roof garden consisting of permanent plants, green dividers and ponds there is a pavilion in which sport studio MIBOSO, restaurant Sterrebos and meeting rooms can be found. The area is built with an interest in sustainability for both building and human. By using efficient ways of using energy inside both buildings and using greenery on the outside in the surroundings for a green, colourful, experience throughout the year sustainability is taken care of. Sport studio MIBOSO benefits from this outdoor environment with the wall-size windows that create an open view on all the greenery.

A logical consequence of this is in line with the surroundings and wishes of the owner of MIBOSO is extending this green experience inside the walls of MIBOSO in combination with creating an extra dimension by using healthy, living nutrition in the form of plants and herbs. Especially in a society where everything is effortlessly attainable at any time and the connection and awareness of food production until the consumption of a healthy meal is diluted creating a countermovement is important in a holistic approach as MIBOSO aspire.

But implementing these wishes and opportunities into real practice hasn't been without any struggles. On the one hand, I was in need to know if and what client of MIBOSO would like to be stimulated towards healthier behaviour. All of this while using indoor and urban farming as a tool. Herefore I did comprehensive research in the point of view that potential clients have towards MIBOSO,current clients have towards MIBOSO and the topic of indoor farming and being stimulated towards healthier behaviour because of it, and how well team members of MIBOSO could empathise with the current clients. This showed that clients would see the added value of such a project but had some other needs and wishes before they would follow such an idea. This made some improvements happen within MIBOSO that improve the quality of business.
On the other hand, the practical implementation of plants in the indoor environment needed to be tested. What systems were in line with financial input, their practice in use, the kind of plants they could hold and of course their design in relation with the indoor environment needed to be addressed first. Before even testing different kinds of plants on how they would react to the indoor environment in terms of health and growth. This without adding any non-biological additives to help the plants maintain their green appearance. In the course of a couple of weeks it showed that the plants need more attention then just adding them towards the environment and maintaining a structured watering schedule. Making sure the plants get the right amount of nutrients and light however is the easiest to fix of the issues that got shown. The pests and insects are of more concern since they feed themselves with already weak plants and make them even weaker. Plus they are more likely to spread towards other healthy plants in the surroundings. On this issue the practical implementation got stuck as we are still looking for the right solution.

In my quest, I may have found different results than what I had imagined. But results are results and that's what you need to work with. But at the same time, knowledge and insight is gained on the perspective of clients of MIBOSO. these insights will help in composing a new and innovative way of stimulating healthy behaviour. So the C of the level can be found in the proCess rather than the result of the project.
