Reflection year 2

CT1 The SHM professional changes, in a sustainable way, behaviour within the field of sport, movement and a healthy lifestyle

SHM1: Testing, advising and guiding in the pursuit of health gain by the means of Sports movement programs.

To obtain more knowledge to fulfil this competence I followed the ETAP course. In which we had to test, analyse and prescribe programs for clients. This is exactly in my interest and I felt this really helped to get more insight in providing the right information to the client.

SHM2: Persuading a sustainable change of behaviour in the field of sport.

Sustainability is a subject I heard a lot during this year. During the course of behaviour and change management we got the theoretical information on how to make people change and sustain their behaviour.

We used this information during the GAME to come up with creative but still sustainable ideas for the municipality of Groningen.

Sustainability was also a main part of my internship at the UMCG Beatrixoord. Here they do their best to help people to change their lifestyles into healthy ones.

CT2 Develops and advises on the strategy and policy in sports and movement

SHM3: Plan wise developing and implementing the strategy and health policy of a sport organisation.

By taking part in the GAME, the internship and following the course intervention strategies I got more knowledge on how strategies are used in practice and this give me a new subject of interest. I always thought it was quite boring and only desk related. But big part of it all is also seeing it happen in practice. This so you could make improvements and create something that really works.

SHM4: coordinating and implementing the policy cycles and strategies.

During intervention strategies, the GAME and the internship policies and strategies were fundamental part of making the world a bit sportier and healthier. At first I found this part of the study quite boring, but during the different assignments of the municipality of Groningen I gained interest in the area. This interest resulted for me that I have a better understanding of larger scale projects such as health intervention which was a learning goal from my PDP. I have come a little bit further but there is still some more knowledge needed.

SHM5: monitoring of quality

During the GAME we worked as a consultancy team for the municipality. Real world problems which needed real world solutions. In order to attain this for the municipality, we as a team needed to be assure the effect and thus quality of our ideas could be monitored. By doing research I got knowledge in best practices and different strategies.

CT3: manages the practical running of a sports organisation

SHM6: managing the finances:

Financial and facility management  give me some basic knowledge on how to do finances within a sports business. With the knowledge from the past I could say I have basic knowledge on this topic. I need to raise my interest in this topic in order to know more than enough.

For next year I would like to broaden my knowledge on the area of finance.

SHM7: Monitoring, checking and accounting sport accommodations

During my internship this competence showed in the working context. All the employees of the UMCG Beatrixoord daily monitored, checked and accounted the different sport accommodations in order to keep everything safe and efficient in use.

By volunteering at MTB-Ameland I needed to do this myself. By keeping the mtb track free of pedestrians and other obstacles.

SHM8: Leading and managing

While volunteering at MTB-Ameland I got the responsibility of leading and managing some first year students to a certain location and let them do their volunteering job in the correct order. The manner in which you communicate has a huge effect on how people will interpret and follow your instructions. I have a certain feeling for this, but I need more experience to improve on this part.

Leading & Coaching is a course which delivered this experience in three different age groups. Children, young adults and elderly. Each group needs a specific way of leading and managing. Especially the energy level is different so you have to tune your level of energy to the specific group. More experience will help me improve more.

CT4: Develops, positions and guides sport and movement programs

SHM9: Designs, organises and supervises sport and movement activities.

Leading & Coaching provided the opportunity of creating activities for three different age groups. Each age group has certain do’s and don’ts that you have to take into account.

Also during my fitness-A course this was the main part. This being in my area of interest resulted in a nice grade. But further improvement could be done by focussing on special subjects within the sports world. Such as the psychology which I also did as an extracurricular.

CT5: creates opportunities and generates resources for sport and movement.

SHM10: To entrepreneurship, develop and innovate.

This year didn’t had a specific focus on entrepreneurship. But period 3.1 next year will provide the knowledge on this area.

SHM11: Implementing sports marketing and PR

Marketing didn’t get any attention this year, but next year I will gain knowledge on this part.

SHM12: Response to developments (environmental awareness)

Healthy ageing made me think about developments within the world of health, sports and healthcare. By doing research and seeing some practical implementations I had to come up with a new view on dealing with the issues in the future and thus dealing with developments.

CT6: performs practical research and fulfils his role as knowledge worker in the sports world

SHM13: researching and advising

Research is part of most of the courses I followed this year. This year I learned more on how different research strategies could be used and are used. By doing this myself I also noticed some pitfalls and learned how to avoid them in future projects. At the end of every research you need to come to a useful advice. This competence is a good one of mine and this also showed in the results of the game. In which our team didn’t had the prettiest idea but on the end the best one.

Generic core tasks:

SHM14: Develop and guarding sport identity (sports consciousness)

By following developments in sports and just having a general interest in sports and the importance of being physically active, I hope I could help with todays and futures issues in the world of sports and movement.

SHM15: Working together and collaborative learning

All the courses were part of a collaborative setting. So each and every project I learn something to improve myself on.

SHM16: Communication

Communication is an important part in everything we do during the education. So at the start of this year I was a little bit worried about my communication skills in English. Because you need to have the right pronunciation, mimic and general appearance. The course of Presentation  & Communication helped me with this and brought my English skills to a sufficient level. I still feel I could gain more, but this will happen when I am in a setting where English is my only option.

SHM17: Reflection and learning

The most important part of learning is reflecting. After each performance of myself within or without a team context I reflected. Reflecting my own performance to my expectations and the expectations of others help me to form future learning goals and adapt certain behaviours to improve myself.

SHM18: Self-control and self-employment

I always thought my self-control and self-employment was spot on. But during this year I learned personal factors will certainly influence your performance. This also learned me how I should deal with problems in the future to still deliver professional products I am proud of.
